Kalachakra Mandala
Kalachakra means Time Wheel. The Time Wheel is believed to be a teaching by Sakyamuni Buddha taught to a few of his disciples. This mandala was commissioned for the Kalachakra for World Peace conference in Graz, Austria, in 2002. It was displayed behind His Holiness the Dalai Lama during his teaching. This teaching tells how a practitioner can achieve Enlightenment in a single human lifetime.
Seven circles surround the palace in the middle of the mandala. From the outside in, there is a multi-colored ray of light, a row of vajras signifying a protection fence, a black wind, a red fire, a white water, a yellow earth, and Mount Meru. The palace has five squares representing body, speech, mind, wisdom, and great bliss. The symbolism here is a visual representation of the complete teachings of a tantra.
