Shanti Deva was an 8th century monk who wrote the Bodhicaryavatara, the Bodhisattva Way of Life. In this thangka, ShantiDeva is reciting the Bohicaryavatara to founding teachers of Tibetan Buddhism. The top figures (from left to right) are: Padmasambhava of the Nyingma sect, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and Drogmi Lotsawa Yeshi of the Shakya sect.

The bottom two figures (from left to right) are: Je Rinpoche of the Geluk sect, and Mahasiddha Tilopa of the Kagyu sect.
